From 1988 to 1992, Gabrels, along with Tin Machine released 3 albums. He also composed soundtracks for PBS and David Lynchmark Frost Productions, performed with The Atom Said, and The Bentmen, and recorded several original compositions that were featured on a variety of labels.
In 1993, Bowie and Gabrels worked together to record Bowie's solo album Black Tie, White Noise
In 1994, Gabrels started the band Modern Farmer and released Hard Row to Hoe. This venture was followed by a tour with Paul Rogers.
In 1995, he composed the sound track for the premiere episode of the PBS series entitled Discovering Women. He also recorded Night in Amnesia with Slide guitarist Dave Tronzo. That same year, he began work on his first solo album, featuring contributions from Frank Black, David Bowie, Gary Oldman, Jeff Gaines, Hunt Sales, and Charlie Sexton. The end result Sacred Squall of Now was released in 1995.
In late 1995, Gabrels joined Bowie again to release and tour for the album Outside. While on this tour Gabrels would open with his own band, perform with Nine Inch Nails, and then play lead guitar for David Bowie.
At the end of the tour in 1996, Bowie and Gabrels went right back to work in the studio to begin work on what would become Earthling (which was nominated for 2 Grammy Awards in 1998). When he was finished recording with Bowie, Gabrels went into the studio with the band Sister Machine Gun.
When Earthling was released in February of 1997, Gabrels began another world tour, which ended in December of the same year. At the same time as he was touring, he helped the band The Cure record their single Wrong Number, and also played a series of live shows with them.
In 1998, Gabrels played on albums with several artists including Jeffrey Gaines, Natalie Imbruglia, and Alicia's Attic. He also played and co-produced Bowie's live album alive and well.com. Later that same year, he found himself working with Public Enemy on He Got Game, adding lead guitar and assorted effects to Dave Navarro's album, and playing slide guitar on the Rolling Stones' single Out of Control. He finished the year by composing and recording the soundtrack for The Farmer's Wife ( a documentary for PBS)
Gabrels spent 1999 and 2000 working on several new projects. He produced and co-wrote songs and instrumental music for the Playstation game Omrikon, working with Bowie producing and co-writing the new Bowie album Hours, and recording his own solo album entitled Ulysses (della notte
