Tom Scholz

Tom Scholz was born in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in June of 1965. He won a full scholarship to MIT, and obtained a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a GPA of 4.8. After he finished, he got a job working for Polaroid as a senior product design engineer.

Scholz always had an interest in music, and created a sound that no one had heard before. In his spare time, he recorded music in his basement. When Epic Records started to show an interest in his music, he had to form a band quickly for an audition. He chose Brad Delp, Barry Goudreau, Fran Sheehan, and Sib Hashian. He finally landed a record deal with Epic, and the album Boston sold over 16 million copies, making it the biggest selling debut album in history.

Scholz has been the main producer and engineer on all Boston albums, as well as playing lead and rhythm guitar, bass, piano, organ, and percussion.

Due to legal problems between the band and it's management company, the band went on hiatus for 7 years.

In 1980, he started his own company called Scholz Research & Development. This company designed and manufactured signal processing devices for musical instruments. Scholz was the one to design the line of Rockman products to help achieve the trademark Boston Sound.

The first device that Tom designed was the Power Soak. Its purpose was to help the amp achieve great sound at low volumes. It quickly became a hit with many well-known guitarists.

When the band re-united in 1986, it was just as a duo with Scholz and Delp.

During the 90's, the band had some personnel changes, including Delp who left the band, but returned after Boston recorded their 4th album in 1994. The 90's line-up consisted of Delp, Fran Cosmo, Gary Pihl, David Sykes, and Curley Smith.

Scholz is also heavily involved in many charitable organizations including GreenPeace, PETA, and domestic violence groups. In 1987, he set up an organization to support causes such as homeless shelters, children's rights, food banks, and animal rights. Through this foundation, he has donated several million dollars to these causes.

In the same year, he was awarded the Mahatma Ghandi Award, and in 1988, he was named "Man of the Year" by the National Hospice Organization.

In the fall of 2002 Boston released "Corporate America" The 6th album in over 20 years. The line-up for this album and live appearances is Scholz, Brad Delp, Fran Cosmo, Gary Pihl, Kimberley Dahme and Anthony Cosmo.
